Eligibility for an Invitation to Apply (ITA)
A candidate can only receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for Canadian permanent residency (PR) through Express Entry if they meet the tie-breaking rule. Several candidates are asked to apply for permanent residency in each Express Entry draw.
Note: A candidate must first receive an ITA (they cannot apply without one) to file for PR through Express Entry.
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) send invitations to apply (ITAs) to the top prospects who meet the requirements for that round of invitations. The Express Entry system uses the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) to give a score to each candidate based on things like their age, schooling, skills, and language knowledge.
For example, if IRCC sends out 3,000 invites in a draw, the top 3,000 candidates will get invited.
Understanding the Tie-Breaking Rule
The tie-breaking rule is used to determine priority when several applicants have the same CRS scores. It depends on the date and time when a person submits their Express Entry profile. This is especially important for candidates whose CRS score matches the draw cut-off, as it decides which candidate gets priority.
If two or more candidates have the same CRS score, the one who has been in the pool the longest will get preference.
What is the importance of the tie-breaking rule?
In the last few years, the number of people in the Express Entry pool has steadily increased. As the number of candidates rises, the chances of various candidates having the same score also increase. As a result, the rules for breaking ties become critical in deciding which applicants are invited to apply.
Can I Change My Express Entry Profile?
The date and time when a candidate first submits their Express Entry profile do not change, even if they make updates to it. If a candidate deletes their profile and submits it again later, the new submission date and time will be recorded as the latest timestamp.
What is the meaning of Express Entry?
Express Entry is Canada’s online system that manages applications from skilled workers who want to become permanent residents. It manages three programs:
- The Canadian Experience Class (CEC)
- The Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)
- The Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)
The highest-scoring individuals receive ITAs from the Canadian government in regular draws to apply for permanent residence. Candidates who qualify receive a score based on their age, education, work experience, and language skills.
The Canadian government regularly holds draws to invite the top-scoring candidates to apply for permanent residence by issuing ITAs.
