Deadline for PGWP Applications Adjusted for Students of College

PGWP

Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) moved forward the deadline for overseas students enrolled in college programs with public-private curriculum licensing agreements to apply for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP). IRCC moved the new deadline from September 1, 2024, to May 15, 2024, following a notification on January 22, 2024. Previously, IRCC set the deadline for September 1, 2024. Graduates of Canadian Designated Learning Institutions have the option to explore many employment avenues across the wide expanse of Canada through the use of a PGWP, which acts as a vital gateway for these individuals. It is not only a permit; rather, it is a chance for international graduates to immerse themselves in the professional landscape of the country. This deadline modification is the result of growing concerns about the quality of education offered by educational institutions with public-private curriculum licensing agreements.

Several reports, including one from the Auditor General of Ontario, have brought to light a disturbing lack of monitoring at these educational institutions about the quality of the programs and the services provided to students. In response to these concerns, the IRCC has decided to adjust the qualifying requirements for the PGWP, which would have an effect on candidates who have graduated from these particular programs.  Because of the absence of PGWP, the IRCC believes that the number of international students enrolling at these universities may decrease. Despite this, the government has provided assurances that individuals affected by this change may still qualify for alternative work permits.

The IRCC remains steadfast in its commitment to upholding communication with the provinces and territories to pinpoint affected programs and promptly update relevant information. In addition, earlier this year, the IRCC disclosed several further revisions to the eligibility requirements for the PGWP. Those who have completed master’s programs that lasted for less than eight months are now eligible for a postgraduate work program that lasts for three years.

The duration of the PGWP is proportional to the length of the applicant’s academic program. Graduates of programs that have lasted for at least two years are eligible for a three-year PGWP, and this includes graduates of master’s degree programs that have lasted for less than two years.

These modifications are a crucial part of the overall strategy that the IRCC has developed to address the exponential increase in the International Student Program over the past few years.
