Study Permit to PR

Table of Contents

Introduction

International students enrolled at a Canadian designated learning institute may qualify for Canadian permanent resident status after the completion of their studies, as long as they meet the conditions of the Canadian immigration programme to which they apply. Applying for a Canadian study visa and Canadian permanent residence status at the same time is known as “dual intent,” and it is a standard and permitted procedure under Canadian immigration laws and regulations.

Step 1 - Graduation from a DLI

Please note that DLI must be PGWP eligible in order for you to apply for PGWP. Please click here to see the list of DLI’s which offer PGWP eligible programs.

Step 2 - Apply for a Post Graduation Work Permit

PGWP is a document that grants you legal authority to work in Canada after you have graduated from an designated learning institute.
An applicant is only eligible for one PWGP permit in their lifetime. To be eligible for this, you must meet the following requirements:
– Must complete a course/program in Canada which leads to degree or diploma or certificate
– Program must be for 8 months minimum
– Student must have legal status at the time of applying
– Student must have studied at a DLI full-time
– Student must have transcript or letter from DLI confirming they have completed their studies at the respective institution

Step 3 - Apply for PR through federal or provincial streams

You may qualify for permanent residency in Canada through one of several streams, such as the Canadian Experience Class, the Federal Skilled Worker Program, or a provincial nominee program.
One of the federal or provincial pathways that may lead to PR depends on your job experience and level of education.
