What is the eligibility criteria for the sponsor?

You can become a sponsor if ALL the situations apply to you.
– You are at least 18 years old.
– You must be Canadian Citizen or PR.
– You must be living in Canada if you are a permanent resident. However, if you’re a Canadian citizen living outside. Canada, you must show that you plan to live in Canada when your sponsored relative becomes a permanent resident.
– You are able to prove that you are not receiving social assistance for reasons other than a disability, and

Who cannot sponsor their spouse?

You cannot sponsor if any of the following situations apply to you.

– You are sponsoring a spouse or partner but you signed an undertaking for a previous spouse or partner and it hasn’t been three years since they became a permanent resident.
– You previously sponsored someone and did not pay back any social assistance that they received while the undertaking was in place.
– You are in default on an immigration loan or a performance bond.
– You did not pay court-ordered alimony or child support.
– You have declared bankruptcy which has not been discharged.
– You were convicted of
an offence of a sexual nature.

– You have an offence against a relative that caused bodily harm or
threatened or attempted to commit any of the above offences—depending on the nature of the offence, how long ago it happened and if you received a pardon.

– You are sponsoring a spouse or partner and you were previously sponsored as a spouse, common-law or conjugal partner and became a permanent resident of Canada less than five years ago.

Can I sponsor If I'm living outside Canada?

Only Canadian Citizens living outside Canada may sponsor their spouse but must prove intention to return to Canada with their spouse upon getting the application approval for their spouse.

How much income does the sponsor need?

There is no requirement of income for this stream. However, sponsor must demonstrate they can provide for basic living expenses for their sponsored spouse.

Who can I sponsor under this class?

You may sponsor your spouse, common-law partner or your conjugal partner.

What is the difference between outland and inland spousal sponsorship?

Inland sponsorship within Canada is available to Canadians and permanent residents who are physically present in Canada with their spouses. Outland sponsorship allows a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada to sponsor their spouse who are living outside Canada.

What is the difference between the sponsor and principal applicant?

In the case of spousal sponsorship, the sponsor is the Canadian citizen or permanent resident who is sponsoring their spouse, and the principal applicant is the spouse who is residing abroad and seeks to reunite with their spouse in Canada.
