After an Express Entry ITA: 60-Day Checklist for Canada PR (2026)

If you have just received an Express Entry invitation to apply (ITA), the next 60 days are not mainly a form-filling exercise. They are a reconciliation exercise: the facts that earned the invitation must still be true, your CRS must still support the round in which you were invited, and the permanent residence application must prove what your profile claimed.

Reviewed by Usman Khalil, RCIC R709592. IRCC’s current Express Entry application, police certificate, medical exam and 2026 fee rules were rechecked on September 30, 2026.

Start here: Your ITA is valid for 60 days. IRCC says to start the permanent residence application right away. Do not spend the first weeks collecting documents before checking whether your CRS, program eligibility and profile facts still reconcile.

What Is an Express Entry ITA?

An invitation to apply is IRCC’s invitation to move from the Express Entry pool into a permanent residence application for a specific Express Entry program. It means your profile was selected in a round. It does not mean IRCC has already verified your CRS, work experience, education, documents or admissibility.

That distinction matters. Before the ITA, your profile is largely a set of declarations. After the ITA, those declarations become evidence questions.

The first five things I would confirm: the program named in the ITA, the 60-day deadline, the round and cut-off, the CRS recalculated on today’s facts, and whether every point or eligibility fact can be supported by evidence.

What I Would Check Before Uploading a Single Document

The most expensive mistake after an ITA is assuming that the invitation means IRCC has already accepted the facts in the Express Entry profile. It has not. The permanent residence application is where those claims have to survive an officer’s review.

  1. Confirm the program you were invited under. Your IRCC account tells you whether the invitation is under CEC, FSW, FST or a provincial nomination route managed through Express Entry.
  2. Recalculate the CRS using the facts that are true today. A change in job offer, provincial nomination, marital status, language results, work status or another scoring factor can matter.
  3. Check the round cut-off and tie-breaking rule. Your recalculated score must still support the invitation you received.
  4. Reconcile every profile date. Employment, education, address and personal history should tell one consistent chronology.
  5. Map the personalized IRCC document checklist before ordering documents. IRCC generates the checklist from the answers in your application. There is no single internet checklist that replaces it.

If your situation has changed and the recalculated score falls below the lowest score for your invitation round, IRCC says you should decline the invitation rather than submit an application that no longer supports the ITA.

Your 60-Day Express Entry ITA Plan

Days 0-3Save the ITA, round details and deadline. Recalculate CRS. Confirm the immigration program and family composition.
Days 1-10Start police certificates, employer evidence and any document that depends on a third party. Book the required Express Entry medical exam.
Days 7-25Complete the eAPR carefully. Reconcile work history, personal history, education, addresses and travel-related facts with the documents.
Days 20-45Resolve evidence gaps. Translate required documents. Prepare explanations only where an explanation is actually needed.
Days 45-60Run a final completeness review, pay the correct fees and submit before the deadline shown in the IRCC account.

The timeline is a planning framework, not an IRCC rule. Some documents take longer and should be started immediately.

What Documents Do You Need After an Express Entry ITA?

IRCC says the online system gives you a personalized document checklist after you complete the application form. That checklist controls what you are asked to upload.

Most Express Entry files will require evidence in several of these groups:

Evidence group What to verify before submission
Identity and civil status Passport, marriage/divorce/common-law records, birth records for dependent children and other civil-status evidence that applies to the family.
Language The test used for eligibility or CRS must still be valid and must match the results entered in the profile.
Education Canadian credential or valid ECA where required, with dates and credential details matching the profile.
Work experience NOC, dates, hours, duties, remuneration and supporting employment evidence should reconcile with the experience used for eligibility or CRS.
Police certificates IRCC’s country and timing rules apply. Start these early because some issuing authorities take time.
Proof of funds Required for some Express Entry applicants and not for others. Apply the rule for the program and facts of the file, not a generic checklist.
Provincial nomination or job-offer evidence Only where relied on. Confirm the document and the underlying facts are still valid.
Medical examination Express Entry applicants currently need an upfront immigration medical exam after the ITA and before applying.

For employment evidence, see MAK’s Canada PR work experience letter guide. For occupation classification, use the NOC 2021 finder and NOC matching guide.

Police Certificates: Do Not Leave Them Until the End

IRCC currently asks for police certificates for you and family members who are 18 or older for countries where the person stayed for 6 months in a row or longer during the last 10 years.

  • For the country where you currently live, the certificate must be issued no more than 6 months before you submit the application.
  • For another country, IRCC says the certificate should be issued after the last time you stayed there for 6 months in a row or longer.
  • If a certificate cannot be obtained before the 60-day deadline, IRCC allows you to upload a letter of explanation and proof of your best efforts. An officer decides whether that is sufficient.

This is one reason I would start police certificates in the first week rather than near day 60.

Your Express Entry Medical Exam After the ITA

IRCC’s current rule for Express Entry is an upfront immigration medical exam: after receiving the ITA, but before submitting the permanent residence application. The exam must be completed through a panel physician.

Family members also have medical examination requirements, including non-accompanying family members where IRCC requires them to be examined. Do not use old guidance that says every Express Entry applicant should wait for a medical request after submission.

How Much Does an Express Entry Application Cost in 2026?

IRCC increased permanent residence fees on April 30, 2026. For Federal High Skilled economic applications, which include Express Entry programs, the current published fees are:

Applicant Processing fee Right of permanent residence fee Current total
Principal applicant $990 $600 $1,590
Accompanying spouse or common-law partner $990 $600 $1,590
Accompanying dependent child $270 Not applicable $270

Biometrics are separate where required: IRCC currently lists $85 for one applicant and a $170 family maximum for family members applying together.

Medical exams, police certificates, translations, document procurement and professional representation are separate and vary by case. I would not use a single invented “all-in Express Entry cost” because those costs are not fixed by IRCC.

What Should You Audit in Your Work Experience Before Submission?

After an ITA, a work reference letter should not be reviewed in isolation. I would reconcile it against the Express Entry profile and the underlying NOC.

Check Why it matters
Employment dates The dates should line up with the period used to qualify or claim CRS points.
Hours and full-time/part-time status The immigration program applies its own work-experience test.
Main duties The evidence must support the NOC being claimed; copying NOC wording into a letter does not prove the work was actually performed.
Remuneration Pay evidence can help corroborate genuine employment and the period claimed.
Employer identity and signatory The letter should be capable of verification and make sense with the rest of the employment record.
Other evidence Pay records, tax documents, contracts or alternative evidence may be relevant when the standard employer evidence is incomplete.

That reconciliation step is more useful than simply asking whether a letter “has all the bullets.”

What If Something Changed After You Received the ITA?

IRCC tells applicants to recalculate their score when their personal situation changes. The important question is whether you would still have received the invitation using the facts that are true when you apply.

Examples IRCC gives include a job offer that is no longer valid, a provincial nomination that is no longer valid, or language results that expire or change after retesting.

If the recalculated score is below the cut-off for the invitation round, IRCC says you should decline the ITA. Submitting anyway can lead to refusal and the application fee may not be refunded.

Declining an ITA Is Different From Letting It Expire

Action What IRCC says happens
You decline within the 60 days Your profile goes back into the Express Entry pool if you are still eligible. You can be considered in later rounds. There is no guarantee of another ITA.
You do nothing and the ITA expires Your profile is removed from the pool. To be considered again, you need to create and submit a new Express Entry profile and meet the eligibility rules again.
You submit with a score that no longer supports the ITA IRCC may refuse the application. The invitation does not protect a profile that no longer supports the round.

What I Would Review in the Final 48 Hours

  • ITA program, round and 60-day deadline
  • recalculated CRS against the round cut-off
  • family composition and marital-status changes
  • language-test and ECA validity
  • NOC and work evidence against the profile chronology
  • police certificate countries and issue dates
  • medical exam evidence
  • funds evidence where the program requires it
  • personal history, addresses and document dates for unexplained gaps
  • translations and document readability
  • correct 2026 IRCC fees
  • every item on the personalized IRCC checklist
My filing rule: do not upload a document because it “looks fine.” Ask what claim it is proving, whether it agrees with the profile, and whether an officer reading the file from scratch could understand the same chronology you intended.

Why an Express Entry Application Can Fail After an ITA

An ITA removes one hurdle: getting invited from the pool. It does not remove the legal and evidentiary tests that apply to the permanent residence application.

1. The application is incomplete

IRCC still performs a completeness review. A missing required document is not cured simply because your CRS was high enough for the draw. Where IRCC’s instructions allow an explanation because a document could not be obtained in time, show the efforts you actually made and use the correct upload field.

2. The work evidence does not support the NOC or period claimed

A letter can contain the right job title and still be weak evidence. I would compare the duties, dates, hours, remuneration and supporting records against the work history used for eligibility and CRS. The file should read like one employment record, not a collection of documents prepared separately.

3. A profile fact changed and the CRS no longer supports the ITA

This is why recalculating before filing matters. Do not assume the invitation locks in points that depended on facts which later changed.

4. Police certificate timing or coverage is wrong

IRCC applies different issue-date rules to the country where you currently live and to other countries. A certificate that looks valid on its face can still be wrong for Express Entry timing purposes.

5. Proof of funds is treated as a generic requirement

Some Express Entry applicants need settlement funds and some do not. The correct question is what your program and facts require when you submit, not whether another applicant uploaded a bank letter.

6. A document expired while you were preparing the eAPR

Language results, passports, police certificates and other time-sensitive evidence should be checked again near submission. A document that was valid when the profile was created is not automatically safe 60 days later.

7. The application contains contradictions

Employment dates that do not line up with personal history, marital-status inconsistencies, unexplained overlapping activities or different versions of the same job can create avoidable credibility problems. I would reconcile the chronology before writing an explanation for it.

Four Situations I Would Handle Differently

You are still waiting for a police certificate

Do not wait until day 59 to discover the country takes weeks to issue it. IRCC’s current police-certificate guidance allows a letter of explanation and proof of best efforts where the certificate cannot be obtained by the deadline, but the officer decides whether the effort was sufficient.

Your language result expired after the ITA

Recalculate immediately. IRCC specifically identifies expired or changed language results as a situation that can lower the score. The decision is not “upload the old result and explain later.” First determine whether the invitation is still supported.

Your provincial nomination is no longer valid

Treat that as a fundamental change, not a document problem. A provincial nomination can materially affect the CRS and the immigration route. Recalculate and follow the provincial and IRCC instructions that apply to the change.

Your employer cannot provide a perfect reference letter

Do not manufacture wording or copy the NOC. Build the evidence record around what can genuinely be proved: employer correspondence, contracts, pay records, tax documents, organizational records and a clear explanation of what is unavailable. The correct evidence strategy depends on the program and the work being claimed.

How Do You Actually Submit the Express Entry PR Application?

Complete the online permanent residence form in the IRCC secure account, upload the documents generated by your personalized checklist, pay the required fees and submit before the deadline shown in the account.

Before pressing submit, download or save the final versions of the forms and key uploads for your records. After submission, keep monitoring the same IRCC account for biometrics instructions, requests for documents or other messages.

What Happens After You Submit the eAPR?

Submitting the electronic application for permanent residence is not the same thing as proving that the file is complete or that eligibility has been passed. IRCC still reviews the application, the documents, program eligibility, CRS-related facts and admissibility.

IRCC may then contact you through the secure account about biometrics, additional documents, an interview or other processing steps. Use IRCC’s live processing-time tool for current estimates rather than relying on old country-specific averages.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do I have after an Express Entry ITA?

You have 60 days to submit the permanent residence application. The deadline in your IRCC account controls.

Should I accept an ITA before collecting documents?

The practical priority is to open the application immediately, confirm the program and deadline, recalculate the CRS and start the documents with the longest lead times. Do not assume the 60 days can be extended because a document was started late.

Can I decline an Express Entry ITA?

Yes. IRCC says a candidate who declines is returned to the pool if still eligible and may be considered in future rounds. Another invitation is not guaranteed.

What happens if my CRS drops after the ITA?

Recalculate it using the current facts. IRCC says that where the new score is below the cut-off for the invitation round, you should decline the ITA rather than apply on a score that no longer supports the invitation.

Do I need an upfront medical exam after the ITA?

Yes under IRCC’s current Express Entry medical instructions: after the ITA and before submitting the permanent residence application.
