Study Permit Extension in Canada
When and how to extend your study permit from inside Canada, timing, and maintained status while you wait.
If you need more time to finish your studies, you may be able to extend your study permit from inside Canada. Apply before your current permit expires so you can keep studying while a decision is pending.
When to apply
Apply well before your permit expires; applying several months ahead is commonly recommended. If you apply before expiry, you generally benefit from maintained status, which can let you continue studying under the same conditions until IRCC decides.
What you typically need
- Proof of continued enrolment at a designated learning institution
- Proof you continue to meet your study permit conditions
- Proof of funds for continued study
- A clear reason for the additional time
If your permit already expired
If your study permit has expired, different rules apply and you may need to apply to restore your status within a limited window. The sooner you act, the more options you usually have. We review your specific timing.
How a licensed RCIC helps
We review your timing, conditions, and documents, explain maintained status, and help you file a complete extension. Final decisions are made by IRCC.
