Can You Apply for a Super Visa While PGP Sponsorship Is Pending? (2026)

Yes. IRCC’s current Super Visa eligibility page expressly says that if you have already submitted a parent or grandparent sponsorship application, the parent or grandparent can apply for a Super Visa while waiting for a decision.

The two applications serve different purposes. A Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) application is a permanent-residence sponsorship application. A Super Visa is a temporary resident visa for eligible parents and grandparents who want to visit family in Canada for extended stays. A pending PGP file does not automatically approve the Super Visa, and a Super Visa does not replace or accelerate the PGP application.

For the main temporary-resident rules, see MAK’s Super Visa Canada page. For the permanent-residence sponsorship route, see Parents and Grandparents Sponsorship Canada.

Can You Apply for a Super Visa While PGP Sponsorship Is Pending?

Yes. IRCC currently states this directly on its Super Visa eligibility page. If a sponsorship application has already been submitted, the parent or grandparent may apply for a Super Visa while waiting for the sponsorship decision.

You do not need to withdraw the PGP application simply because you want to apply for a Super Visa. IRCC separately notes that a sponsor may withdraw the sponsorship application and apply for a Super Visa, but withdrawal is not required in order to submit the Super Visa application.

Super Visa vs PGP Sponsorship: Two Different Applications

Issue Super Visa PGP Sponsorship
Purpose Temporary family visit Permanent residence
Status granted Temporary resident status if admitted Permanent residence if the sponsorship and PR application are approved
Length of stay Eligible Super Visa holders can generally stay up to 5 years at a time under the current rules Not a temporary-visit status
Income test Super Visa host-income rules Separate PGP sponsorship financial requirements
Medical insurance Required under the current Super Visa rules Not the same Super Visa insurance requirement
Can both exist at the same time? Yes. IRCC expressly allows a Super Visa application while a submitted sponsorship application is awaiting a decision.

Does a Pending PGP Application Make the Super Visa Easier to Approve?

No automatic approval follows from the sponsorship file.

The Super Visa applicant and host must still meet the Super Visa requirements. IRCC assesses the temporary-resident application separately. A pending PGP application explains the family’s long-term permanent-residence plan, but it does not remove the requirements that apply to the temporary application.

The Super Visa file should therefore be prepared as a complete application in its own right rather than as an attachment to the PGP file.

What Super Visa Requirements Still Apply?

IRCC’s current Super Visa framework requires both the applicant and the Canadian host to meet program requirements. Depending on the case, the file can involve:

  • proof that the host is the applicant’s child or grandchild;
  • proof of the host’s qualifying Canadian status;
  • the required invitation letter;
  • proof that the host meets the current minimum income requirement;
  • qualifying private health insurance;
  • an immigration medical examination where required; and
  • the general requirements for temporary entry to Canada.

For a practical invitation-letter checklist, see MAK’s Super Visa Invitation Letter: What to Include (2026).

What Changed for Super Visa Income in 2026?

IRCC changed the Super Visa income calculation effective March 31, 2026. The new framework gives hosts more flexibility in how the income requirement can be met, including an extended income-assessment period and, in qualifying situations, the ability to use income of the visiting parent or grandparent toward the remaining amount.

Applications already in processing on March 31, 2026, as well as applications submitted on or after that date, are assessed under the updated rules.

See MAK’s Canada Super Visa Rules Updated From March 31, 2026 for the current framework.

What Is Happening With the PGP in 2026?

IRCC announced in July 2026 that it is pausing new intake under the Parents and Grandparents Program. It is continuing to process existing applications.

That distinction matters for this question:

  • someone who already has a submitted PGP application can continue waiting for that permanent-residence decision; and
  • the parent or grandparent can separately apply for a Super Visa if they meet the current requirements.

For the current intake position, see MAK’s Parents and Grandparents Program 2026: Where It Stands.

Does the Super Visa Cancel or Replace the PGP Application?

No. A Super Visa approval does not convert the PGP application into another program and does not cancel a pending sponsorship file.

The Super Visa is temporary. The PGP application remains the family’s permanent-residence process unless it is withdrawn, refused or otherwise concluded.

Can a Parent Stay in Canada Until the PGP Is Finished?

A Super Visa does not give unlimited status in Canada. The visitor must comply with the period of authorized stay and maintain valid temporary status.

Under the current Super Visa framework, eligible visitors can generally stay for up to five years at a time. A person in Canada may also have options to apply to extend their authorized stay, subject to the current rules and an approval decision.

A PGP file can remain in process longer than a particular period of temporary status, so the family’s status strategy should be monitored separately from the PR application.

Should You Apply for a Super Visa if the PGP Is Already Pending?

The answer depends on the family’s actual objective.

A Super Visa can make sense where the parent or grandparent wants to spend an extended period with family in Canada while the permanent-residence application remains in process and the host can meet the current Super Visa requirements.

It may be less useful where the applicant does not meet the Super Visa requirements, does not need an extended visit or has another temporary-resident option that better fits the facts.

The key point is that a pending PGP application does not by itself prevent a Super Visa application.

What Should the Super Visa Application Say About the PGP File?

The application should be accurate and internally consistent. The existing PGP application should not be hidden.

The file can explain that the family has a permanent-residence sponsorship application in process while the current request is for temporary entry under the Super Visa program. The evidence should then address the requirements of the Super Visa application itself.

Do not create a temporary-resident narrative that contradicts information already provided to IRCC in the PGP file.

Can You Apply for a Regular Visitor Visa Instead?

Possibly. IRCC notes that a person who does not meet the Super Visa requirements, or who wants to stay for six months or less, may be eligible to apply for a regular visitor visa.

The Super Visa is designed specifically for parents and grandparents seeking longer stays with eligible Canadian children or grandchildren.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can my parents apply for a Super Visa while their sponsorship is processing?

Yes. IRCC expressly says a Super Visa application can be submitted while an already-submitted sponsorship application is awaiting a decision.

Do I have to withdraw the PGP application first?

No. IRCC permits the Super Visa application while the sponsorship remains pending. Withdrawal is a separate option, not a prerequisite to applying for the Super Visa.

Will the Super Visa speed up the PGP application?

No. The Super Visa and PGP are separate processes. A Super Visa approval does not accelerate or guarantee the permanent-residence decision.

Will a pending PGP application cause a Super Visa refusal?

A pending PGP application does not create an automatic refusal. The Super Visa application is assessed on its own requirements and the applicant’s circumstances.

How long can a parent stay on a Super Visa?

Under the current rules, eligible Super Visa holders can generally stay for up to five years at a time, subject to the person’s authorized entry and status.

Is the PGP accepting new applications in 2026?

IRCC has paused new PGP intake and is continuing to process existing applications. The current status should be rechecked before relying on an older invitation or intake article.

Need a Case-Specific Review?

If your family has a PGP application in process and you want to assess a temporary Super Visa application without creating inconsistencies between the two files, MAK can review the existing sponsorship history, current Super Visa eligibility and supporting evidence.

See MAK’s Super Visa service page or book a consultation for case-specific RCIC advice.

Disclaimer: General information only. A pending sponsorship application does not guarantee a Super Visa. IRCC makes the final decision on both temporary and permanent-residence applications.
