Quick answer: IRCC processing times for Canadian spousal sponsorship change over time and differ between applications made for a spouse or common-law partner living in Canada and applications for a spouse, common-law partner or conjugal partner living outside Canada. When MAK checked IRCC’s official processing-times tool on September 7, 2026, the tool showed about 26 months for in-Canada applications and about 18 months for outside-Canada applications for couples settling outside Quebec; IRCC dated those figures September 3, 2026. These are estimates, not guarantees, and the live IRCC tool should be checked before relying on any number.
This guide explains what those estimates mean, the stages a sponsorship file normally moves through, why one application can take longer than another, and when a delay may justify follow-up. It is general information, not case-specific advice. IRCC makes the final decision on every application.

Current Spousal Sponsorship Processing Time in Canada
| Application type | Latest MAK-verified IRCC estimate | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Spouse or common-law partner living in Canada, outside Quebec | About 26 months | IRCC figure dated September 3, 2026; checked by MAK September 7, 2026 |
| Spouse, common-law or conjugal partner living outside Canada, outside Quebec | About 18 months | IRCC figure dated September 3, 2026; checked by MAK September 7, 2026 |
| Quebec-destined applications | Check the live IRCC tool | Quebec has a separate sponsorship process and its own undertaking requirements |
IRCC updates its processing-times service and explains that the figure is an estimate of how long processing may take, not a maximum or guarantee. The estimate can change with application inventory, processing capacity and expected application volumes. Always confirm the current number in the official IRCC processing-times tool.
Inland vs Outland: Why the Timelines Are Different
The terms inland and outland are commonly used to describe two different sponsorship routes. An in-Canada application normally refers to the Spouse or Common-Law Partner in Canada Class. An outside-Canada application is normally processed through the Family Class.
The faster published estimate is not automatically the better route. The correct choice can depend on where the sponsored person is living, their status in Canada, travel plans, work-permit needs, appeal rights, previous immigration history and the evidence available to prove the relationship.

The Spousal Sponsorship Timeline: What Happens After Submission
1. Completeness review and Acknowledgement of Receipt
IRCC first checks whether the application is complete enough to enter processing. A true Acknowledgement of Receipt, or AOR, confirms that the permanent residence application has been accepted into processing after the completeness stage. A submission confirmation and an AOR are not the same thing.
2. Biometrics and medical examination
Where required, IRCC may issue biometrics and medical instructions. Completing these steps does not mean eligibility or background screening has been approved; they are separate parts of processing.
3. Sponsor eligibility
IRCC assesses whether the sponsor meets the legal sponsorship requirements, including status in Canada, age and any applicable bars or defaults.
4. Relationship and applicant eligibility
Officers assess whether the relationship fits the legal category claimed and whether it is genuine and not entered into primarily for immigration purposes. The evidence must be consistent across forms, supporting documents and the couple’s history.
5. Background, security and admissibility checks
IRCC may complete criminality, security, information-sharing and other admissibility checks. The time required can differ substantially from one file to another.
6. Final decision and permanent residence confirmation
After all required assessments are complete, IRCC can finalize the application. Applicants in Canada may complete the permanent residence confirmation process electronically. Applicants outside Canada may have different finalization steps depending on their circumstances.
Why a Spousal Sponsorship Application Can Take Longer
- Missing or inconsistent forms or supporting documents
- Additional relationship-evidence requests
- Previous marriages, sponsorships or complex family history
- Questions about immigration status or previous refusals
- Medical, criminality, security or other admissibility review
- Slow responses to IRCC requests
- Visa-office workload or application inventory
- Quebec-specific sponsorship processing where applicable
A file taking longer than the published estimate is not, by itself, evidence that it will be refused. Likewise, completing biometrics or a medical examination does not by itself establish that the remaining assessments are complete.
Can a Sponsored Spouse Work in Canada While Waiting?
A spouse or partner living in Canada with the sponsor may be eligible for an open work permit while the permanent residence application is in process, subject to the current IRCC eligibility rules. Work authorization should never be assumed merely because a sponsorship application or work-permit application has been filed.
For the current eligibility framework, use MAK’s Spousal Open Work Permit page and the detailed inland sponsorship with open work permit guide.
Can a Sponsored Spouse Apply for a Visitor Visa?
A spouse or partner outside Canada may apply for a temporary resident visa while the sponsorship application is being processed. IRCC has stated that faster visitor-visa processing may be available for eligible sponsored spouses and partners after the sponsor receives the AOR confirming the permanent residence application is in process. The applicant must still satisfy the temporary-resident requirements; faster processing does not guarantee approval.
How to Check the Status of a Spousal Sponsorship Application
IRCC provides online tools for checking application status. The information available depends on the type of application and the stage of processing. The sponsor and principal applicant may not always see identical information.
If the file is materially beyond the published estimate, the appropriate follow-up depends on the facts. Options can include checking the online account or status tracker, submitting an IRCC webform, requesting information through ATIP where appropriate, or obtaining professional advice where there is a specific concern. Repeated status enquiries do not themselves make an application move faster.
Processing Time Is Not the Same as a Service Standard
A processing-time estimate describes how long IRCC expects or has taken to process a category of applications under its current methodology. It is not a promise that an individual application will be decided by that date. A complex file can take longer, while another file may be finalized sooner.
MAK also maintains a broader explanation of the IRCC processing-times system and how to read the estimates.
What MAK’s Spousal Sponsorship Research Adds
Processing time is only one part of the picture. MAK’s IRCC Spousal Sponsorship Advanced Analytics 2026 transparency dataset and comparative review examines what IRCC publicly discloses about advanced analytics used in spouse and partner processing. The research is separate from the processing-time estimate and should not be used to predict the outcome of an individual file.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does spousal sponsorship take in Canada in 2026?
The number changes. When MAK checked IRCC’s official tool on September 7, 2026, IRCC showed about 26 months for in-Canada spouse or common-law partner applications and about 18 months for outside-Canada spouse, common-law or conjugal partner applications, for couples settling outside Quebec. Check the live IRCC tool for the current estimate.
Is outland spousal sponsorship faster than inland sponsorship?
At the September 2026 check noted above, the published outside-Canada estimate was shorter. That does not mean outland is the correct route for every couple. Status, travel, work-permit needs, appeal rights and evidence can matter more than the published difference.
Does AOR mean my spousal sponsorship is approved?
No. AOR confirms that IRCC has accepted the application into processing after the completeness stage. Eligibility, admissibility, background screening and the final decision are separate.
Does passing the medical mean the application is almost finished?
Not necessarily. Medical admissibility is one part of processing. Other eligibility and background assessments can still remain.
What should I do if my application is over the processing time?
First confirm the current estimate for the correct category. Then review the application status and any outstanding requests. Depending on the circumstances, an IRCC webform, ATIP request or professional review may be appropriate.
