What UK-based applicants should know before applying to Canada
Canadian immigration options for applicants in the United Kingdom depend on the exact program, the passport held, the applicant's work and education profile, and the evidence available to support the file. A strong application starts with the right route, the right documents and current Canadian rules.
Express Entry from the United Kingdom
For many skilled applicants in the UK, Express Entry is one route worth assessing. Applicants must prove language ability through an approved language test. Where education was completed outside Canada, an Educational Credential Assessment is required for Federal Skilled Worker foreign-education eligibility and can be used to claim eligible Express Entry education points. UK work experience can be relevant where it meets the requirements of the applicable program.
Visiting Canada from the UK
Travel-document requirements depend on citizenship and the passport used, not simply residence in the United Kingdom. British citizens travelling to Canada by air generally need a valid passport and an electronic travel authorization rather than a visitor visa. A UK resident travelling on another passport should check the current Canada entry requirement for that nationality.
Family sponsorship while living in the UK
A Canadian citizen living outside Canada can sponsor an eligible spouse, partner or dependent child where the sponsorship requirements are met and the citizen can show a plan to live in Canada when the sponsored person becomes a permanent resident. A Canadian permanent resident living outside Canada cannot sponsor from abroad.

Frequently asked questions
Can I apply for Canadian immigration while living in the UK?
Yes. Many Canadian immigration and temporary-residence programs accept applications from people living outside Canada. Eligibility must be established under the specific program rather than from UK residence alone.
Do native English speakers in the UK still need a language test for Express Entry?
Yes. Express Entry applicants must use an IRCC-approved language test and enter valid results in the Express Entry profile, including applicants whose first language is English or French.
Does UK work experience count for Canadian Express Entry?
UK work experience can be relevant to an Express Entry program when the work meets that program's requirements. Occupation classification, duties, dates, duration and other eligibility facts should be reviewed before experience or points are claimed.
Do British citizens need a visitor visa to fly to Canada?
British citizens travelling to Canada by air generally need a valid passport and an electronic travel authorization rather than a visitor visa. Check the current IRCC travel-document requirement before travel.
Can a Canadian citizen living in the UK sponsor a spouse or partner?
A Canadian citizen living outside Canada can sponsor an eligible spouse or partner when the sponsorship requirements are met and the citizen can show a plan to live in Canada when the sponsored person becomes a permanent resident. A Canadian permanent resident living outside Canada cannot sponsor from abroad.
