Practical Singapore guidance

What Singapore-based applicants should know before applying to Canada

Canadian immigration options for applicants in Singapore depend on the exact program, the passport held, work and education history, family circumstances and the evidence available to support the file.

01

Express Entry from Singapore

Singapore residence or citizenship does not itself create Express Entry eligibility. Applicants must qualify under an eligible program and still prove language ability through an IRCC-approved test. Foreign education used for Federal Skilled Worker eligibility or eligible Express Entry education points requires an immigration-purpose ECA.

02

Travelling to Canada with a Singapore passport

Singapore is on IRCC's eTA-required list. Singapore citizens flying to or transiting through a Canadian airport need a valid passport and eTA and do not need a visitor visa. When arriving by car, bus, train or boat, they generally do not need an eTA but still need a valid passport.

03

Family sponsorship while living in Singapore

A Canadian citizen living outside Canada may sponsor an eligible spouse or partner when the requirements are met and the citizen can show a plan to live in Canada when the sponsored person becomes a permanent resident. A Canadian permanent resident living outside Canada cannot sponsor from abroad.

Singapore to Canada FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Can I apply for Canadian immigration while living in Singapore?

Yes. Many Canadian immigration and temporary-residence programs accept applications from people living outside Canada. Eligibility comes from the specific program, not residence in Singapore alone.

Do Singapore applicants still need a language test for Express Entry?

Yes. Express Entry applicants must prove language skills with an IRCC-approved test, even when they already use English in Singapore. See MAK's Express Entry guide for the detailed national rules.

Does work experience gained in Singapore count for CEC?

No. Work performed in Singapore is foreign work, while the Canadian Experience Class requires qualifying Canadian work experience. See MAK's CEC guide for full current eligibility.

Do Singapore citizens need a visitor visa to fly to Canada?

No. Singapore is on IRCC's eTA-required list. Singapore citizens flying to or transiting through a Canadian airport need a valid passport and eTA rather than a visitor visa.

Do Singapore qualifications need an ECA for Express Entry?

Foreign education needs an immigration-purpose Educational Credential Assessment when it is used for Federal Skilled Worker principal-applicant eligibility or to claim eligible Express Entry education points.

Can a Canadian RCIC represent me while I live in Singapore?

Yes. A licensed Canadian RCIC can advise and represent a client remotely in Singapore. MAK's Canadian immigration representation is provided by Usman Khalil, RCIC R709592, and Omer Khalil, RCIC R710149.
