Visitor Record Canada (2026): Extend Your Stay Before Your Status Expires

Canada visitor extensions • 2026

Need to stay in Canada longer as a visitor?

A visitor record can extend your authorized stay in Canada or change your temporary-resident category to visitor in eligible circumstances. The deadline printed on your visa is not necessarily the date your permission to stay expires. Start with the status date, not the visa sticker.

Discuss your visitor-status options

Before expiry

IRCC says you must apply before your authorized stay ends; it recommends applying at least 30 days in advance.

Not a visa

A visitor record gives an expiry date for staying in Canada. It does not itself authorize international travel or re-entry.

Different from restoration

Applying before your status ends can preserve status while IRCC decides. After status has been lost, restoration is a separate assessment.

First, identify which situation applies

Situation 01

You are visiting Canada and need more time

Check your current authorized stay. If you remain eligible, apply for a visitor record before the status expiry date, not merely before the validity end of a multiple-entry visa.

Situation 02

Your study or work permit is expiring

IRCC allows some students or workers to apply to change their temporary-resident category to visitor before expiry. This does not by itself grant continuing work or study authorization after the relevant permit rights end.

Situation 03

You applied before expiry and are waiting

IRCC says a person who applied to extend their stay before their authorized period ended can legally remain while the extension is being decided, under the conditions of their existing status. This is maintained status, subject to the applicable rules.

Situation 04

Your status already expired

Do not describe a late visitor-record application as having preserved status. Certain people can apply for restoration within 90 days of losing status, but not everyone qualifies and the rules differ. Consider personalized advice promptly.

What is the real expiry date for a visitor?

For many visitors, the usual permitted stay is up to six months, unless an officer authorizes another period. If an officer put a leave-by date on a passport stamp or issued a visitor record, use the relevant date. If you entered without a stamp, IRCC generally describes a stay of up to six months from entry or until the passport expires, whichever comes first. Some special categories, including certain super visa holders, have different rules.

Common mistake: A visitor visa with years remaining does not mean you may stay in Canada continuously until that visa expires. A visa enables travel to request entry; the authorized stay is a separate matter.

How to apply for a visitor record online

  1. Verify your date and category. Check entry stamps, your most recent visitor record or permit, passport validity and the requirements for your current status.
  2. Decide what you are requesting. Are you extending a visit, or changing from worker/student to visitor? Choose the correct process instead of filing a visa application intended for someone entering from abroad.
  3. Prepare the reason and evidence. Explain the proposed length of stay, available funds, accommodation and why the extension is requested. Account for the facts in your earlier entry or permit application.
  4. Use IRCC’s visitor-record online application process. IRCC directs applicants to select “Visit” and Canada as their current country of residence in its online tool. Follow the personalized checklist and complete the forms requested, including IMM 5708 when applicable.
  5. Submit before the expiry date. Keep the confirmation of submission, upload records, payment confirmation and copies of what you filed. Applying early reduces last-day technical and status risk.
  6. Track the decision and conditions. If approved, review the new visitor-record expiry date. If refused, promptly reassess the person’s status and next steps rather than assuming the earlier extension application continues to protect them.

IRCC advises applicants to apply at least 30 days before expiry, but the basic legal distinction is whether an eligible extension application was submitted before status expired. Do not treat 30 days as a permission to file late.

What changes while your application is pending?

Maintained status and permission to work are not interchangeable. A visitor extension does not create a work permit. If you were a worker or student and ask to change to visitor status, whether you may continue working or studying depends on your actual permissions and the applicable IRCC rules; do not assume visitor status keeps those privileges.

Also consider travel carefully. A visitor record is not an entry document, and departure or re-entry can change the practical and legal assessment. Check your visa or eTA and the current travel guidance before leaving Canada while an extension is pending.

If your status has already expired, see MAK’s separate guide to restoration versus maintained status. A restoration application and an on-time extension are not interchangeable.

What should you put in your supporting explanation?

A clear extension explanation should match the actual reason for the visit, duration requested and evidence you can provide. IRCC’s personalized checklist determines what you must upload; the following is a review framework, not an additional government document list.

  • Dates: original arrival, current authorized stay, intended new departure date and passport expiry.
  • Purpose: family visit, tourism or other lawful temporary purpose, with a coherent explanation of the additional period.
  • Practical support: accommodation arrangements and sufficient funds for the planned stay.
  • Immigration history: accurate previous applications, status changes and refusals where asked.
  • Consistency: documents and dates that do not conflict with the current application or any separate sponsorship, study or work process.

Visitor record questions

Is a visitor record the same as a new visitor visa?

No. A visitor record can authorize an extended period of stay in Canada. It is not a visa or eTA, and it does not guarantee permission to travel back to Canada.

Can I extend my stay while visiting my spouse in Canada?

You may be able to apply if you meet the visitor-record rules. A pending family sponsorship application does not itself extend temporary-resident status; check your authorized stay and keep your visitor extension separate from any PR or open-work-permit process.

If I apply 10 days before expiry, do I automatically lose status?

IRCC recommends at least 30 days in advance. An eligible application submitted before the actual status expiry may provide maintained status while it is decided. The timing, type and completeness of the application and your current status matter.

Can I work while a visitor-record extension is pending?

A visitor record does not grant permission to work. Any right to work must arise from a separate authorization or applicable rule; do not assume that applying to remain as a visitor extends it.

Can I apply for a visitor record after my status has expired?

Restoration may be possible in some circumstances, generally within 90 days of losing status, but is separate from an on-time extension and is not automatic. Review the official restoration instructions against your facts.

Protect your status before planning the next application

Whether you are extending a visit, changing from student or worker to visitor, or facing a late-status problem, your authorized stay and application dates must be reconciled before anyone recommends a filing route.
