Practical U.S. guidance

What U.S.-based applicants should know before applying to Canada

Canadian immigration options for applicants in the United States depend on the exact program, the passport held, the applicant's work and education profile, and the evidence available to support the file. A strong application starts with the right route, the right documents and current Canadian rules.

01

Express Entry from the United States

For skilled applicants in the United States, Express Entry is one route worth assessing. U.S. citizenship, permanent residence or residence in the United States does not itself create Canadian immigration eligibility. Express Entry applicants must prove language ability through an approved language test, and foreign education may require an Educational Credential Assessment for Federal Skilled Worker eligibility or eligible education points. U.S. work experience can be relevant where it meets the requirements of the applicable program.

02

Visiting Canada from the U.S.

Travel-document requirements depend on citizenship and U.S. status, not simply residence in the United States. U.S. citizens travelling with a valid U.S. passport do not need a Canadian visitor visa or eTA. U.S. lawful permanent residents are also exempt from the eTA requirement but must carry the travel and U.S. status documents required by IRCC.

03

Family sponsorship while living in the U.S.

A Canadian citizen living outside Canada can sponsor an eligible spouse, partner or dependent child where the sponsorship requirements are met and the citizen can show a plan to live in Canada when the sponsored person becomes a permanent resident. A Canadian permanent resident living outside Canada cannot sponsor from abroad.

U.S. to Canada FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Can I apply for Canadian immigration while living in the U.S.?

Yes. Many Canadian immigration and temporary-residence programs accept applications from people living outside Canada. Eligibility must be established under the specific program rather than from U.S. residence alone.

Do applicants from the United States still need an approved language test for Express Entry?

Yes. Express Entry applicants must use an IRCC-approved language test and enter valid results in the Express Entry profile, including applicants whose first language is English or French.

Does U.S. work experience count for Canadian Express Entry?

U.S. work experience can be relevant to an Express Entry program when the work meets that program's requirements. Occupation classification, duties, dates, duration and other eligibility facts should be reviewed before experience or points are claimed.

Do U.S. citizens need a visitor visa or eTA to travel to Canada?

No. U.S. citizens travelling with a valid U.S. passport do not need a Canadian visitor visa or eTA. U.S. lawful permanent residents are also exempt from the eTA requirement but must carry the documents IRCC requires for their status and mode of travel.

Can a Canadian citizen living in the U.S. sponsor a spouse or partner?

A Canadian citizen living outside Canada can sponsor an eligible spouse or partner when the sponsorship requirements are met and the citizen can show a plan to live in Canada when the sponsored person becomes a permanent resident. A Canadian permanent resident living outside Canada cannot sponsor from abroad.

Can a Canadian RCIC represent me while I live in the U.S.?
