Practical China guidance

What China-based applicants should know before applying to Canada

Canadian immigration options for applicants in China depend on the exact program, the passport held, the applicant's work and education profile, and the evidence available to support the file. A strong application starts with the right route, the right documents and current Canadian rules.

01

Express Entry from China

Living in China or holding Chinese citizenship does not by itself create Express Entry eligibility. Applicants must prove language ability through an IRCC-approved language test. Education completed outside Canada needs an Educational Credential Assessment for Federal Skilled Worker eligibility as a principal applicant or to claim eligible foreign-education points. Work experience gained in China can be relevant when it meets the requirements of the applicable Express Entry program.

02

Visiting Canada from China

Travel-document requirements depend on citizenship and the passport used, not simply residence in China. A passport issued by mainland China is currently visa-required for a visit to Canada. A person living in China who travels on another passport should check the current IRCC entry requirement for that citizenship before travel.

03

Chinese-language documents

For an Express Entry permanent-residence application, a document that is not in English or French must be accompanied by the translation and the original or certified-copy material required by IRCC. Translation details depend on whether a certified translator is used, so the current instructions for the specific application should be followed rather than a generic checklist.

China to Canada FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Can I apply for Canadian immigration while living in China?

Yes. Many Canadian immigration and temporary-residence programs accept applications from people living outside Canada. Eligibility must be established under the specific program rather than from residence in China alone.

Do applicants in China need a language test for Express Entry?

Yes. Express Entry applicants must use an IRCC-approved language test and enter valid results in the Express Entry profile. Residence or citizenship in China does not remove the language-test requirement.

Does work experience gained in China count for Canadian Express Entry?

Work experience gained in China can be relevant to an Express Entry program when the work meets that program's requirements. Occupation classification, duties, dates, duration and other eligibility facts should be reviewed before experience or points are claimed.

Do mainland Chinese passport holders need a visitor visa for Canada?

Yes, mainland China is currently on IRCC's list of visa-required countries and territories. A traveller using another passport should check the current IRCC entry requirement for that citizenship and travel situation.

Do Chinese-language documents need translation for a Canadian immigration application?

Where a required document is not in English or French, follow the current IRCC translation instructions for the specific program. Express Entry permanent-residence applications require the translation and the original or certified-copy material specified by IRCC.

Can a Canadian RCIC represent me while I live in China?

Yes. A licensed Canadian RCIC can advise and represent a client remotely in China. MAK's Canadian immigration representation is provided by Usman Khalil, RCIC R709592, and Omer Khalil, RCIC R710149.
