Occupation specific draws – Which categories will be targeted by the IRCC?

This year, the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has made the decision to initiate occupation-based draws through its Express Entry immigration selection system. The draws will focus on up to 82 occupations in five fields, with the aim of addressing labour shortages.

The federal immigration authority of Canada, IRCC, made an announcement on May 31st regarding the categories that will be selected for the category-based Express Entry draws. These draws have the potential to lead to permanent residency in Canada, provided that an invitation to apply is extended.

The category-based draws will be conducted in conjunction with the standard Express Entry system. Typically, in random selections, the federal government extends invitations to foreign nationals who possess the highest Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score to submit an application for permanent residency.

The federal government has recently introduced a new system of draws categorized by specific criteria. Under this system, the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will extend invitations to candidates with the highest rankings, who possess a strong command of the French language or have a minimum of 6 months of work experience in the designated fields.

a. Healthcare

b. , technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) professions

c. Trades, such as carpenters, plumbers and contractors

d. Transport

e. Agriculture and agri-food

The newly introduced categories were specifically aimed at addressing the issue of unfilled job vacancies across Canada. The federal government views immigration as a crucial means of mitigating labour shortages in Canada and addressing vacancies that are difficult to fill through domestic labour. The aforementioned categories were selected subsequent to legislative mandates implemented in the preceding year. The aforementioned modifications were implemented subsequent to consultations with various provinces, territories, and other relevant stakeholders.

The Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has asserted that the act of inviting a greater number of foreign nationals possessing the requisite skill sets as per the aforementioned categories would aid Canada in the admission of highly sought-after professionals who would serve as a means of bolstering the country’s economy. The category-based draws are anticipated to commence imminently and are not projected to be extended beyond the year 2023. An exact date has not been provided by either the immigration minister or the federal government.
